Ways to run old software on
modern computers

System requirements:
- Basilisk II runs on several system
environments including MacOS X.

Pixels and 16.7 Mill. Colors

This is an 68k-Emulator for MacOS X. Basilisk
emulates either an 68020-, 68030- oder 68040-Mac, so that "old"
Macintosh software runs on modern Macintosh computers. Modern ones
only can display 256 or more colors, while "old" software accept
"only" up to 16 colors. Maybe it is ROM-dependently whether you can
display less than 256 colours or not.
Which games may run on Basilisk you can read on
the Compatiblity
table.

Important
issues:
|
|
In the Preferences on the left (Hard
Disks) do not click"Delete"; This button deletes the
used Image not-remakable from HD. Instead click on "Remove"!
You will be asked if you really want to delete the file,
this will not be happen.

Make a copy of your Disk Copy
images. If you emulate MacOS 8.x and it crashes,
the image is destroyed and Basilisk cannot start
it again. Replace the crashed image with a
intact image.
|
|
|
Use Basilisk in full screen mode. This is
the fasted mode!
|
|
If you want to use a CDROM in Basilisk,
please put it into the drive before opening Basilisk. Be
aware that it will be ejected when you "turn off" the
emulated MacOS.

Hard Drive Disk
Images:
|
|
|
- The windows version of Basilisk II
uses so called HFV files (*.hfv).If you own a Macintosh,
just use Disk Copy. Rename the extension from ".img" to
".hfv". These should not be compressed, not be
write-protected and not mounted on the host OS (on
Basilisk port for MacOS) while mounting in
Basilisk.

(also useful for Mac owners)

|
Hard Drive Disk Images and MacOS X:
|
The Mac version of Basilisk uses standard Disk Copy Image files.
Simply create them with the application "Disk Copy" v.6.3 or if
you're using MacOS X with the app "Disk Utility" located in
"Applications" folder. Now "format" your Disk image using the "Disk
Utility" by clicking on the TabPanel "Delete" or maybe "Format" on
english systems (while the Image is mounted). Please use the Volume
format "MacOS Standard" to do so. If you're using MacOS 8.1 or
higher, you may format your Disk with "MacOS Extended". This one uses
the Hard Disk space more efficient.

Printing
|
|
|
I think, the only way to print within Mac
emulators is to use the Shareware printer driver called
"PrintToPDF".
|
|
|
Msgs at switching on an
OldWorld-Mac:
|
|
If Basilisk shows a flashin' "X" within a
symbol of a diskette, this means that no valid system can be
found.
|
|
If Basilisk shows a flashin' "?" within a
symbol of a diskette, this means that the Mac finds no
system on hard disk or diskette.
|
|
A hardware error occurs. Normally the
authorized Apple dealer knows by the letter/number
combination, what's wrong with this Macintosh. Quit Basilisk
and open it again.
|
|
|
Found System, booting it...

- Further files to required to run
Basilisk:
To run Basilisk you need further files that you
should generate from you own Macintosh Quadra. I'm not allowed to
give you a link to download them, or, in other words, you can get
more informations at the Underdogs link.
- If you've any questions left, ask
them and I try to add the answer to
this site.
