System requirements:

  • Mini vMac runs on several system environments including MacOS X.
  • ROM file extracted from Mac Plus or SE
King's Quest 1 b&w Mac version.

This emulator makes it possible to use b&w software under MacOS X. E.g., if you start the King´s Quest parts 1, 2 and 3 under a modern MacOS, you get display problems. vMac emulates a Macintosh Plus or an Macintosh SE and you can use "old" software on modern computers. Modern computers only can display 256 or more colors, while "old" software only accept 16 colors. "Old" color games you can play using Basilisk.

Which games may run on Mini-vMac you can read on the Compatiblity table.

How to install MacOS 7.0 to run in vMac

This hint works with Motorola-equipped Macintoshes (Processor type 68000, 68020, 68030, 68040) and with PowerPC-equipped Macintoshes in the Classic Environment of MacOS X, too:
(badly, this hint works not with Intel-based Macintoshes)
  1. Create a Disk Copy Image big enough to fit System software and your stuff
  2. Copy System 6 to this Disk Image
  3. Mount in HostOS (e. g. 9.x) all System diskettes of MacOS 7
  4. The MacOS 7 Installation progress works without any issues if executed in MacOS 9

Msgs at turning on an OldWorld-Mac:

If vMac shows a flashin' "X" within a symbol of a diskette, this means that no valid system can be found.

If vMac shows a flashin' "?" within a symbol of a diskette, this means that the Mac finds no system on hard disk or diskette.

A hardware error occurs. Normally the authorized Apple dealer knows by the letter/number combination, what's wrong with this Macintosh. Quit vMac and open it again.

Found system, booting it...

If you get a flashing "X", just install your own System 6 or 7 on a Disk Copy image, or get MacOS System 7.5.3 from Apple Computer's Oldersoftwarelist and insert your game disk as second disk.

If you've got an disk image containing a system that won't open in vMac try checking that it has not been saved in the "read only compressed" format that Disk Copy usually saves images to as vMac will not read these. just open Disk Copy and select convert image. Chose your image and it will show you the format it is currently in, just change it to "read write" and it should works.
